The title “On Stillness & Movement” is a lie. We cannot find stillness though, as we approach it, some movements become more significant: the heartbeat, the digestion, the breath, the little movements that keep our balance.

The warmup is not just about moving our bodies but about preparing ourselves. From the point where we are at that moment, we have to take ourselves to where we need to be. So often, we engage in the thing we want to achieve without bringing ourselves and our desires there. Paying close attention to our physical desires can be a powerful tool for movement creation, for developing new approaches and ways of moving.

This workshop is largely based on improvisation and uses different strategies to find detail and precision in movement. By placing them in relationship to stillness, we learn to highlight and focus our movements better. Using elements of dance, theatre and meditation, we will look at how different mindsets and approaches may change our movement patterns, as well as how our movement patterns effect our thinking – for the creative process, for performance, for life.

Jos started his dance training at the age of 7 with Oxford Youth Dance and then continued his formal education first at The Laban Center London and then at P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels. From 2008 to 2014, he worked for Peeping Tom as a dancer, actor and collaborator, principally with the productions „32 Rue Vandenbranden“ (2009), and „A Louer“ (2011). Since then, he worked briefly for DV8 Physical Theatre on the production of „John“ (2014). His own choreographic work includes a.o. „Put Out the Flame“ (2019-20) and „The Smallest Little Thing“ (2019) commissioned by The Hong Kong Arts Festival. He also made several commercials, music videos and short films; a.o. as a dancer and choreographic assistant to Damien Jalet for „Anima“ (2019). In addition, he teaches a wide range of classes and workshops for professional dancers and dance students.
